So, you are starting a cake business from home and you are ready to learn, learn, learn. I don?t blame you especially if you are looking to turn a profit. In baking, it is crucial that you follow any recipe to a ?T? if you are beginning. So, it is equally important to know the difference between the types of utensils used in baking. So, let?s review exactly this!
Before we go over some of these remember to always use the correct size that is clearly specified in every recipe. You don?t want your cake to overflow or burn around the edges and bottom because this will cost your cake business money. Also, be aware of the type of dish you are using. A good rule of thumb to note is that glass dishes generally require a 25-degree reduction in temp. Ok, here we go.
? baking dish: a glass utensil
? baking pan: a metal utensil
? pie plate: Glass
? pie pan: Metal
? Baking sheet: a sided pan (15×10×1-inch); also known as a half sheet pan.
? Cookie sheet: has no sides and is used for cookies only.
? Springform pan: features two pieces: a bottom and a rim with a buckle for releasing cakes or tarts.
? Tube pan: is a deep, round metal pan with a hollow center tube.
? Bundt pan: a shallow tube pan that is curved and fluted for baking a specific style of cake.
? Tart pan: usually metal. Unlike a pie pan, it has straight sides (some fluted, some not) and many have a removable bottom.
? Silicone baking pan — the newest type — is made of highly flexible polymer. The material is non-stick; can withstand oven temperatures up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit; and is safe for use in the freezer, microwave, and dishwasher.
Now that you know your pans and dishes, let?s review how to properly prepare your pan. Some recipes call for greasing, flouring, parchment or waxed paper. If you are to grease a pan, use a brush, waxed paper, fingers or paper towel to apply a thin layer. Or you can coat the pan with non-stick spray.
For greasing and flouring follow the steps above then add a few tablespoons of flour to the pan and tap the bottom until it is distributed evenly. A fun tip for chocolate cakes is to use cocoa powder to eliminate the white color on the bottom of cake.
These are just a few tips to help those starting a cake business. Cake decorating is an art and you want to begin the process properly or the end result may not turn out as expected.
