Many marketers will agree that the power of Internet really lies in its capability to reach customers so quickly and efficiently. Before the Internet had a role to play in marketing, marketers relied on various other forms of communicating, usually opting to use the postal system (frequently called ?snail mail?, for a reason) or door-to-door salesmen to deliver messages to customers. The arrival of the Internet changed all that. Suddenly marketers had electronic mail to play with and this was a medium that could do in seconds, things that took days or weeks to do.
And as marketers realized that email marketing is, indeed, a very effective way of getting their messages to their existing and potential customers, they started to put more time and effort into the procedures. That is also when online marketers realized that the list of customer information that they possess is their key to a potential goldmine. Of course, when one realizes the worth of something they have, the best way to treat is with a lot of care, caution and with lots and lots of attention.
That is how list management became such an important job. List management consists of anything to do with compiling, administering, maintaining and updating a firm?s email list. It almost goes without saying that this list would constantly be changing, after all, consumer profiles are always altering, whether marketers like it or not. So, an organization that takes email marketing seriously should definitely have someone prudent look over the firm?s list management functions.
To say the very least, the list manager has a responsible job. Because the list is ever changing, with names continuously going on and off the record, regular updates are very important. A complacent list manager is one who thinks that once a name is on their list, it would remain there forever. Keep in mind that consumers are good at changing their mind. At one point they might have been interested in knowing what you want to say, but a few days (or months or years) down the line they might decide that they are no longer paying attention to what you have to say. As a marketer it is your job to keep them interested, but if they do change their mind about you, it does not make much sense to force your messages on ?deaf ears?.
And, of course, while there are customers who choose to unsubscribe from your list, there would also be those who are signing up with you. These sign-ups also do not happen by accident. The marketer has to convince online shoppers that their newsletters are worth reading. And as new people decide to opt into your email list, you have to make sure that the information that they have given you is correct and adequate to get in touch with them.
Perhaps one of the most basic rules of Internet marketing is consent. The nature of the Internet is such that it is quite possible to force marketing information onto Internet users. There are plenty of marketers who choose to market in this rather distasteful way and consumers choose to call this kind of communication spam or bulk. A marketer should not hope to get too much out of spam mails and that is another reason why updates are so important on your mailing list. It is extremely important that the list manager ensures that your communications are not being tagged spam by uninterested recipients; this can prove to be unfavorable to your firm?s reputation. It is crucial that a list manager understands that all communication online should be consensual.
Some times marketers are unwilling to let their recipients unsubscribe from their mailing list, but then again, this is an action of naïve marketers who believe they have more power than they actually do. At the end of the day, the email inbox belongs exclusively to the recipient and they have the right to decide what they get and don?t get. The list manager should be aware that email marketing would be successful only if the firm is in the recipient?s good books.
The list manager always has to be on his or her toes because they are dealing with something that can change as often as daily. Names can go on and off the list on a day-to-day basis and these changes should be put into effect as often as possible. There are a number of softwares that can help the manager take care of lists and lend a hand with updates and supervision of the list. The main thing is that the list manager should understand the responsibility of being in charge of customers? personal information.
